Herron-Morton Oktoberfest, Urban Times Article

Join us for the first annual Herron-Morton Oktoberfest at HMP Park! Oktoberfest originated in Munich in the 1800s, but the contemporary version of Oktoberfest is celebrated around the world. It typically begins the third weekend in September, which is when we will be holding our celebration. The event will give you an opportunity to enjoy the company of fellow downtown neighbors as well as savor your favorite local beers, food trucks, and live music.

The event will be held on September 24th from 3pm-10pm at the HMP Park (1900 block of Alabama). Purchase tickets online at: oktoberfesthmpf.com. Advanced tickets are $5 or purchase tickets the day of the event for $10 (cash only). We would love to partner with our local friends and are looking for volunteers as beer vendors, food vendors, financial sponsors, or attendants at the event by emailing info@oktoberfesthmpf.com.

HMPF Oktoberfest will feature local beer, including The Upland Brewing Company, and local food providers for purchase at the event. You can also enjoy live music from Fountain Square’s Hero Jr. Tell your friends, family, and neighbors to purchase tickets today!

About Me, Angela Unrue, Professional Stylist

Angela is an urban hair stylist with an entrepreneurial spirit. She works independently and pulls inspiration from fashion blogs, antique stores, and the energy of the city. Although her style is always evolving, she is particularly influenced by the fashion and culture of the late 60s through the 80s. A few of her favorite things include Farrah hair, boots, sequins, feathers, leather jackets, big sunnies, piles of jewelry, and all things owl.

Even before graduating from the Douglas J. Aveda Institute in East Lansing, MI, Angela knew she was a perfect fit for hairdressing.  She has explored the industry to the fullest over the years and loves to share her creativity and knowledge with her guests.  They will be the first to tell you that she is one of the best stylists in Indianapolis and is continually improving her craft through advanced education. Angela will make you feel beautiful whether its by getting a Brazilian Blowout, enhancing your natural color, or even creating a new edgy look.

When choosing a stylist everyone is looking for someone they trust. Angela values building lasting relationships with her guests, which is one of the most important parts of being a stylist.  It takes more than simply knowing how to cut and color hair well to generate happy and satisfied guests. One of Angela’s greatest strengths is her ability to engage and educate her guests and involve them in the creation process. She loves to explain the chemistry and color theory behind her art and make them feel a part of the creation. Angela has both the talent and dedication to give you a hairstyle that you will love.

Edited Quarterly Newsletter, Herron-Morton Foundation

Dear Neighbor,

As spring begins to greet us, The Herron-Morton Place Foundation Board would like to thank each of its residents for being a part of our team in protecting, revitalizing, and promoting Herron-Morton Place. We hope that you share our pride in living in a place where we can know our neighbors and work together towards the betterment of Indianapolis.

The Herron-Morton Place Foundation (HMPF) elected new board members during the Annual Meeting held on Feb. 16, 2011. One of our first orders of business is to share a few of our goals as well as give you the opportunity to join us in supporting the neighborhood. HMPF is a 501C3 not-for-profit comprised of volunteer elected board members who are dedicated to serving HMP and its residents. HMPF often works with the Herron-Morton Place Association; however, the two organizations are separate entities with unique sets of goals. Watch for upcoming projects and events in our quarterly newsletter.

One of HMPF’s major projects is to continue to develop the former “Foundry Buildings” on 16th Street while also actively seeking a suitable tenant for the space. To learn more about HMPF projects or to contact Board Members please follow this link: www.herron-morton.org/foundation/about/.

Another one of HMPF’s primary goals is the continued maintenance of the Herron-Morton Place Park in the 1900 block of Alabama. The park was developed entirely with private donations and grants in excess of $250,000.  HMP did not receive funding from Indy Parks and it continues to exist entirely through donations and membership dues. There is currently no endowment for the ongoing maintenance of the park and these costs (including insurance) are now over $7,000 annually.  The establishment of an endowment fund is a goal that the HMPF will be pursuing in the near future.

HMPF would like to thank those who have already renewed their memberships for 2011 and would like to invite those of you who are not currently members to join us for the 2011 year. Each membership (whether you are a homeowner, renter or small business) is critical to the ongoing support and upkeep of our park and neighborhood as a whole. HMPF is committed to serving you and the neighborhood, but we need your partnership to be successful. When you become a member you will also receive one free reservation for use of the park (the normal charge is $25 per day!).  Please email Kathy Shortridge at klkstoo@yahoo.com for reservations. Annual membership is good from February 2011 until February 2012.

On behalf of the HMPF Board, please take a few minutes and review the attached membership form (or go online at http://www.herron-morton.org/foundation/memb_form/). Costs are $25 for an individual or $40 for a household.  HMPF is counting on your support, but whether or not you choose to become a member, the park is there for your use and enjoyment. We hope you take advantage of this great neighborhood treasure and all of the other benefits that HMP has to offer.

Sincerely,

Tony Kaufman

Artist Statement, Oxidize

Humanity is caught in a cycle. A deeply rooted tension persists between man and nature. Man builds form, nature overcomes form, form becomes dirt, man uses dirt to create form. This is the consistent dialogue between the natural world and humanity. It is a discussion of decay and renewal, creation and deterioration. It tells a bittersweet story of the aesthetic dance between the human and the natural. There is beauty in the decay. This fascinating cycle of creation and destruction permeates the whole of the human experience.
